Brief

Our client engaged us during the renovation of his Victorian terrace. He had mud, weeds and a pile of building waste for a rear garden. He wanted a low maintenance garden, for relaxation and entertaining. He wanted tall plantings along one of the boundary fences, for screening and privacy.

Solution

We installed a generously-sized deck, to spill from the client’s interior living area. We integrated both spaces by matching the timber colour of the deck with the interior floor boards. The deck doubles the client’s living space and allows room for a large outdoor dining table.

We built a relaxed seating area beyond the deck. The seats wrap around a pond and fountain, which also serves as a table. We have planted clumping bamboo for screening. The bamboo will form a contained, narrow screen of around six metres in height.

Ficus pumula will grow to cover the brick wall behind the seat. Once this brick wall is covered in green, the space will take on a verdant, lush feel. This will be enhanced as the maples grow, throwing dabbled light over the seat and deck spaces and adding year round interest with changing seasonal colour foliage.
