This is recently created garden. Plantings against the wall will grow to two metres and the rest will fill the bed with colour and texture over the next couple of years.

Brief

The clients were keen to have a usable space at the rear of their compact inner city property. The space consisted almost entirely of rock - both underground and exposed. Towards the rear of the block, the rock was as high as one metre. The rock was not attractive enough to form a feature and too expensive to remove, yet made the creation of a usable space challenging.

Solution

We suspended a deck over the low lying rock towards the house, to achieve a deck at the same height as the interior floor height, to integrate the indoor and outdoor spaces. We then constructed seating and a raised garden over the higher sections of rock. The clients did not want any trees at the back, so we planted shrubs, miscanthus grass, which will grow about two thirds of the way up the brick wall, allowing glimpses of the brick through the spaces. We planted ground covers, which will form a carpet of contrasting colour, from which the beautiful stone water feature will emerge.

Lighting within the deck and garden creates and beautiful entertaining area at night and irrigation reduces maintenance.
